Summary:
Great to hang out with writer friends in real life this week – a real boost! And lots of good paid work done, too.
Monday:
I had no paid editing work to do this morning, though I did have to write a very long explanation to a client as to why what he was asking me to do was unreasonable… Still hoping at least part of that project will come to fruition, but I guess we’ll have to see!
I had my online focus session in the afternoon, during which I wrote the next scene of my current novel, A Wizard Calls My Name. I also submitted to some writing competitions.
Later, I read a chunk more of The Glass Books of the Dream Eaters, for the next Reviews Revisited podcast episode and found myself unexpectedly enjoying it tremendously, which is very different to my recollections of the first time I tried reading it, many years ago.
Quite late in the day, my client from earlier replied to say he was very grateful for my explanation and happy to go ahead in the way I suggested – so I suddenly had a ton of extra work (and extra money – yay!) in the schedule for the next few weeks.
Tuesday:
I generally prefer to be working on more than one client project at a time, as I find it easier and more fun to switch between editing tasks, rather than having to do multiple hours on the same thing in one work session.
But, I only had the one new project to work on the rest of this week – so I buckled down, got my focus hat on and launched into copy editing the longest self-help book ever…
Luckily, it turned out to be in extremely good shape, needing only a very light touch on the copy editing front, and very few developmental comments in the first 85 pages.
Later, I read a lot more of The Glass Books of the Dream Eaters and added a lot of notes to my podcast script.
Wednesday:
I decided I wanted to finish work on editing the first half of the self-help book so I did another chunk this morning, despite Wednesday usually being my day off.
I also read more of The Glass Books and added to my podcast script.
Thursday:
I edited another large chunk of the self-help book, reaching the halfway point, which was what I’d agreed with the author I would complete before Christmas. So, massively ahead, which felt good – though I perhaps shouldn’t have offered to try and finish the second half before Christmas too…
Friday:
I read another big chunk of The Glass Books and added to my podcast script.
I also wrote a fairly long review of The Mirror by Nora Roberts, which I finished listening to this morning, despite intending to wait to read it until mid-2025. Ah well…
Saturday:
I met up with several members of one of my writing groups at a cafe in town this morning, for a focus session. I read more of The Glass Books on the train in and made some more podcast notes. Then, it took longer than usual, but I managed to complete the next Wizard scene, so progress is still good on that.
Then I took a look at a fun competition I’d been told about the day before, and worked on a potential entry for that, which I managed to submit before we broke for lunch.
Sunday:
I did some work on generating a few ideas for the next scene of Wizard, since it needed to be a big battle and I was nervous about tackling it.
