Weeknotes – S08E34 – Self-Publishing Stress

Summary:

Very little paid editing work but that’s okay, lots of freeglancing but that’s okay too. Progress on my latest novel and self-publishing my first – tough but worth it?

Monday:

Two of my writer friends sent me drafts of their latest books to review over the weekend, so I slotted them into the editing schedule, basically filling up my ‘work’ time until after I get back from holiday at the end of September. Luckily, I’ve banked and booked enough paying work to be able to do this – and I can always move things around a bit if any more paying projects come along in the meantime.

I reviewed a brief piece from my regular blog client, then went back to my only big paid editing project still ongoing – the YA fantasy novel – for a bit.

I also had the pitching documents for the volunteering book to look at, along with another blog post for Dave, and starting a developmental review of my friend Hannah’s latest middle grade novel.

In my afternoon focus session, I wrote the next post for Stanley’s blog – all about the paradoxical theory of change!

I also wrote reviews of a book I finished and a play we went to see last week.

Tuesday:

I split my morning between my only remaining paid editing project – the YA fantasy novel – and my two writer-friend projects – the middle-grade fantasy and the cozy crime novel.

I also wrote a review of The Ferryman, which I finished over breakfast.

After lunch, Revision Club saved me once again from deferring writing any more of my own current novel, A Wizard Calls My Name, and I wrote the next scene.

I also made my first attempt at self-publishing my debut novel, The Defiant Spark, after I was dropped by my publisher over the summer. It took 45 minutes but I managed to submit all the e-book information to Amazon KDP, which was, in itself, quite complicated and stressful. So, one iteration down, probably four more to go…

Later, I also got the paperback submission for Amazon done, too!

Thursday:

It was just me at the freelance coworking day for a few hours in the morning, so I got plenty done!

I finished editing the YA fantasy novel and sent it back to the client with an enthusiastic message about wanting to work on the rest of the series, as I really enjoyed it.

That left me with no paying projects left on my docket, though I was less panicked about that than I would usually be, as I have expected work coming in soon and also the two friends’ novels to work on in the meantime.

So, I moved on to both of those next.

After lunch, I really didn’t want to write my novel, but I did. And next scene flowed just as well as all the others, which was great – I just wish I could find a bit more enthusiasm for writing it, rather than having to battle with myself to start every time. Still, I hit the 15% mark at 17,000 words, which felt really good.

Saturday:

I wrote reviews of three books.

I also wrestled with uploading The Defiant Spark to IngramSpark and eventually had to give up on the e-book version, though I may have managed to get the print version done…
